Serena Williams US Open controversy

Serena Williams, right, talks with referee Brian Earley during the women's final of the US Open tennis tournament against Naomi Osaka, of Japan, Saturday, September 8, 2018, in NY.

The decision to reprimand Williams polarised the tennis industry and wider sporting press, especially after Williams claimed she had been treated differently than a male tennis player would have been. "When a man does the same, he's "outspoken" & and there are no repercussions".

Appearing on ESPN, Adams also claimed there are double standards in terms of how umpires treat women and men. "More voices are needed to do the same". "It's a Grand Slam final!"

"We always had to go by the rules", Court, who dominated tennis during the 1960s and early 1970s, said according to a report in The Australian.

After the match, Mouratoglou admitted: "I was coaching ..."

"Because the young player outplayed her in the first set, I think pressure got her more than anything".

The 23-time grand slam champion was handed three code violations - for coaching, racquet abuse and verbal abuse - culminating in a game penalty late in her defeat.

But I believe there is a compelling reason against coaching during matches: the introduction of on-court coaching runs counter to one of the fundamental purposes of the sport. When Osaka was announced the victor, the audience booed her, but Williams came to her defense.

Tamaki Osaka, mother of Naomi Osaka, cheers after her daughter's women's singles semi-final match victory against Madison Keys of the US at the 2018 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, on Sept 6, 2018. But Williams' coach's admission that he was in fact cheating on the court casts a different light on the matter. Williams received her first violation on Saturday for receiving coaching.

The tennis superstar was docked a game for insulting the umpire after she called him "a liar" and "a thief" in an angry tirade on Saturday.

Answering a comment from Julie Di Caro, Knight wrote: "Well Julie here's a cartoon I drew a few days before when Australian male tennis player Kyrgios at the US Open was behaving badly".

But Djokovic said he did not see things in the same way as WTA chief Simon, adding: "I don't understand from where he's coming with that statement". The row escalated and she was given a third violation for her conduct, which resulted in a game penalty. Venus Williams disputed that, telling Ramos (via Sky News), "I'm 36 years old".

Others tried to pick holes in the authenticity of the cartoon, such as Williams never having actually jumped into the air and onto her racket during her tirade.

One Tweet said: "It was straight up racism and sexism".

The whole clash between Williams and chair umpire Carlos Ramos showed that there are inconsistencies with officiating and questions about the place of coaching.

He didn't win the title, but Juan Martin del Potro got back to a major final for the first time since his triumph at Flushing Meadows in 2009.
