First Colin Kaepernick advert for Nike ‘to air during National Football League opener’ - Ireland

Some fans responded to Kaepernick's sponsorship deal by cutting or burning gear with Nike's signature swoosh logo. Nike's online sales grew 31% over the Labour Day weekend, compared to a 17% growth over the same period previous year, according to Market Watch.

"There was speculation that the Nike/Kaepernick campaign would lead to a drop in sales but the Edison Trends data does not support that theory", Edison co-founder Hetal Pandya said in a statement to HuffPost. Nike reported a more than 30 percent increase in sales since the release of the ad, which has been viewed over 16 million times on YouTube.

This prompted various people on social media to post videos and pictures of them destroying their Nike merchandise, with some even calling to start boycotting the brand.

The timing of the ad campaign, days before the first game of the National Football League season on Thursday, is likely to stoke the controversy over pre-game protests. "I don't think it's appropriate what they did", President Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox News before a rally in Montana. As a camera pans to reveal Kaepernick's face, a reflection of a United States flag is visible on the facade of a building behind him. "But I think as far as sending a message, I think it's a awful message and a message that shouldn't be sent".

The former NFL quarterback who has become famous for his kneeling protests of social and racial injustices during the national anthem stars in the ad, which premiered during NBC's broadcast of the season-opening game between the Eagles and Falcons. He later switched his protest to kneeling, and a number of other players have since joined his protests.

Ironically, while the president's supporters were trash-talking Nike, Trump boasted in an interview with the Daily Caller: "Nike is a tenant of mine".

Davis said he believes Americans are growing exhausted of divisiveness and that Nike is "stirring controversy".

"I think every athlete, every human, and definitely every African-American should be completely grateful and honored (for Kaepernick)", Williams said.
