Pompeo says did not author New York Times 'resistance' column

"In fact, one of the things that I even think, just looking at that piece, because it's so inconsistent with the White House that I know, is that I'm just not sure that it's a genuine piece", Hassett said on Friday morning, later adding: "I think the letter might be a fraud".

The official said that early on in the administration, some officials quietly discussed invoking the 25th amendment of the US Constitution, which allows the removal of a president judged unable to perform his duties. He called it "a disgrace" and the writer "gutless" during an event with sheriffs at the White House on Wednesday afternoon. Many have privately shared some of the article's same concerns about Trump with colleagues, friends and reporters. "Mr. Trump may fear such honorable men, but we should revere them".

Trump called Woodward's book "total fiction", and Defense Secretary James Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly have denied that they bashed the president.

In Washington, the claims of "not me" were echoed from Mr Pence's office, from energy secretary Rick Perry, from Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman, from Dan Coats, director of national intelligence, as well as a host of other USA cabinet members.

The White House reportedly has a list of about 12 suspects. He said the author is "failing" and "probably here for all the wrong reasons".

"Supposing I have a high level national security, and he has got a clearance, we talked about clearances a lot recently, and he goes into a high level meeting concerning China or Russian Federation or North Korea or something", he said. "These people aren't accountable", he said.

Donald Trump has urged the attorney general to investigate who wrote an article that raised questions over his fitness for office.

"No, Dir. Mulvaney is not the author", a spokesperson for Mulvaney told NBC News.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a "Make America Great Again" rally in Billings, Montana U.S., September 6, 2018.

"He would basically be like, 'We've gotta get rid of them".

That idea was also supported by an unsigned article for The New York Times published Wednesday, which said that "unsung heroes" were quietly working within the administration to frustrate the president's "worst inclinations".

"It may be cold comfort in this chaotic era, but Americans should know that there are adults in the room".

"We fully recognise what is happening". The Justice Department is one of the few that has not issued such a statement.

The op-ed, written by an unnamed "senior" official, described a secret inside effort to protect the country from Trump's "misguided impulses".
