Ryder Cup: Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson among captain's picks for Team Europe

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau were selected as captain's picks to participate for the United States at the 2018 Ryder Cup by team captain Jim Furyk on Tuesday.

While 48-year-old Mickelson will break a Ryder Cup record with his 12th involvement in the tournament, Woods is simply happy to be there after fears over his playing career due to multiple back surgeries. 9, 10 and 11 in points when qualifying ended for eight automatic berths after the PGA Championship.

"It's been a treat to be around the Ryder Cup team, and to be able to have this honor is incredible", said DeChambeau, who has three victories in his past 10 worldwide starts.

Woods said: 'At the beginning of this year one of my goals was to make this team. "It's like a football team going without their captain, that's what it's like for us", said the Dane.

The 25-year-old laced his drive, but it came to rest less than 5cm into the medium rough at the end of the fairway and although he was only 185m from the flag, his second shot was impaired sufficiently by the rough to leave it well short and in the hazard. "I'd love to be on that team".

'I'm excited about the team this year, I'm excited to be part of the team.

The left-hander, who was 10th in the U.S. standings, shot his lowest round of the season on Monday, an eight-under-par 63, to finish three ahead of Woods.

U.S. captain Jim Furyk will name three of his four wildcard picks on Tuesday, and after DeChambeau's recent successes, it is unthinkable he will not be included among them.

If Europe fails to win on home soil for the first time in 25 years when the two sides compete for the cherished cup September 28-30 at Le Golf National outside of Paris, Bjorn surely will be subject to second-guessing for his captain's picks. I got off to a great start this year. "And it showed, and it paid off".

"If he goes around and shoots eight-under par every time, that will work", Woods said with a smile.

After a penalty drop, Smith couldn't recover to make par and fell one behind Rose into third and leaving the stage for a relatively stress-free walk up the last for DeChambeau.

Casey has not been a part of Team Europe since making his third appearance in the defeat at Valhalla in 2008, and he was controversially overlooked for the 2010 team by Colin Montgomerie when the Englishman was inside the top 10 in the world rankings.

Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bubba Watson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson and Rickie Fowler automatically qualified for the team. "And naming these three players, that's what we've done".
