Health officials continuing to monitor measles outbreak

The CDC is reporting over 100 people were reported to have measles in 21 states, including CT.

There have already been 107 cases reported this year; the majority were diagnosed in people who were not vaccinated, CDC reports.

Professionals say more people are visiting the US from places where there are not requirements to be vaccinated against measles, posing a serious threat to individuals who are not vaccinated or live with a compromised immune system.

States included in the report are Arkansas, California, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kansas, Illinois, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington. She said the measles virus can stay in the air for up to two hours and if you've been exposed to it and haven't been vaccinated, there's a 90 percent chance you'll become infected with it. "CDC works with local and state health departments throughout the year on any number of infectious diseases, including measles cases", a CDC press officer told ABC News.

The symptoms of measles usually show up 10 to 14 days after exposure.

The illness begins with a high fever, red eyes, cough, runny nose, and is followed by a red, raised body rash starting on the head and face that then spreads to the rest of the body.

"The 107 cases reported to CDC have been since January 2018 across 21 states, but they are not one unified outbreak". In 2014, the United States experienced a record number of measles cases, with 667 cases from 27 states reported to the CDC. "One dose of MMR vaccine is 93% effective against measles, 78% effective against mumps, and 97% effective against rubella". People with the disease can remain contagious for up to four days.
