Mauricio Pochettino backs Tottenham to improve despite lack of signings

Spurs were frustrated in attempts to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa this summer, but further recruits were dependent on players leaving the club first. At a press conference hours before the transfer deadline the Argentinian all but confirmed there would be no signings, but declared himself happy with the situation and warned his players he expects them to feel the same way too.

However, former Arsenal star Merson is backing the Gunners to finish outside the top four despite the influx of new talent in the 2018 summer transfer window.

But there have been no new arrivals in north London, something which the Spurs manager said was in part down to Brexit making players more expensive.

"That maybe looks bad because of the perception and history of football but that is our decision - to keep the best players and to keep the squad".

Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele have all been linked with moves away from Tottenham this summer, and Pochettino has asked for their "commitment" for their new season, which begins against Newcastle United this weekend.

But Pochettino believes all three are at risk of losing focus and has urged them to forget about their futures and contribute to Tottenham's season instead.

"For me [that] is to be courageous". I think it is clear what is going on and how we are going to move in the future. "We hope he's still our player by Friday", Villa manager Steve Bruce told BBC West Midlands earlier this week. Of course, we are open to improving but if you can't improve the most important is to keep your best team and players. "It's a fearless decision". If we have all the squad thinking as individuals rather than as a collective game, you can not achieve what you want and can not succeed. "Some people make a drama in football and drama for me is another thing", Pochettino said. "That is the key this season". They need to give their best.
