They would also expand a Palestinian fishing zone.

It said about 150 rockets had been launched from Gaza towards Israeli territory.

"I am deeply alarmed by the recent escalation of violence between Gaza and Israel, and particularly by today's multiple rockets fired towards communities in southern Israel", said UN Middle East envoy Nickolay Mladenov in an overnight statement.

"Hamas hit the "enemy" with a large number of rockets", it said.

Lt Col Conricus would not comment on Israeli media reports of troops preparing for a possible ground operation, but said Israel "had ground troops that are ready to deploy".

Thirty of rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, which is activated only against those projected to hit populated areas, whilst the majority of the projectiles fell in open areas.

Hamas claimed responsibility for the fresh rocket attacks into the occupied lands, saying it was avenging the deaths of two fighters killed in an Israeli tank fire in Gaza on Tuesday.

"This morning we are closer to war", the officer said, adding that the IDF attacks will continue in the coming hours and that reinforcements are on their way.

"The Israeli government and the US administration are responsible for the escalations in the Gaza Strip and for the continuation of the 11-year-long blockade [of Gaza]", government spokesman Yousuf al-Mahmoud said in the statement.

The Gaza Ministry of Health identified the slain Palestinians as Alaa Youssef Ghandour, 30, Einas Mohammed Khamash, 23, and her toddler daughter, Bayan.

The Palestinian news agency WAFA, citing health sources, reported at least 12 Palestinians were wounded. One of the jets struck a factory that was being used to produce components intended for the construction of terrorist tunnels leading into Israel, the army said.

It was the third severe flare-up of violence since July and came despite attempts by United Nations officials and Egypt to secure a long-term truce between Israel and Hamas. That was followed by the rocket fire and then the Israeli strikes.

A woman was seriously injured when a rocket exploded in a house, launched from the Gaza Strip, in the Eshkol Regional Council, near the coastal enclave controlled by the Islamic terrorist group Hamas.

Both sides have said they are working toward a cease-fire agreement, though continued rocket fire may dampen efforts.

Air raid sirens signaling incoming rocket fire continued in southern Israel on Thursday morning, raising the likelihood of further Israeli reprisals.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called off a trip to Colombia this week to attend to the Gaza truce talks and was due to convene his decision-making security cabinet on Thursday to discuss the situation.

"The Israeli strike was conducted in response to the rockets launched from the Gaza Strip at Israeli territory over the course of the evening and night", it said in a statement. Support UN/Egypt efforts to restore calm and agree ceasefire.

The flare-up comes as Egypt is trying to broker a long-term ceasefire between the two sides.
