Saudi FM says 'nothing to mediate' in dispute with Canada

"Canada knows what it needs to do", he said.

"7, 2018, Saudi Grains Organization (SAGO) can no longer accept milling wheat or feed barley cargoes of Canadian origin to be supplied", the notice to grain traders said.

The report comes a day after the Toronto Stock Market saw a major selloff from an unknown worldwide dealer, in contrast to gains in other global markets.

The move was in response to tweets from Global Affairs Canada and Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland criticizing Saudi Arabia's arrest of women's rights activists, including Samar Badawi, a Canadian citizen whose brother - blogger Raif Badawi - was already imprisoned in the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia has cut diplomatic ties with Canada, expelled the Canadian ambassador, frozen trade and investment between Riyadh and Ottawa and halted flights to and from Canada.

Saudi Arabia has restricted travel, medical access, and students' scholarships to Canada while using its state-owned media to bash the country as unjust.

Responding to a question about the reason for the activists' arrests, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister said that charges against them would be made public once their cases reach the courts, repeating earlier allegations that they had been in touch with foreign entities.

It remains unclear how many Saudi patients will be affected by the decision.

The Financial Times reported Wednesday that the regime has ordered its central bank and massive sovereign wealth fund to sell off any Canadian assets, which the newspaper estimated to be a "fairly small" fraction of its total $100 billion in foreign holdings.

"I will say Canada is very comfortable with our position", she told reporters.

The students will reportedly be put in programs in other countries, such as the US and United Kingdom. The selling began on Tuesday, it said.

Saudi Arabia's main state wheat buying agency told grains exporters it will no longer accept Canadian-origin grains in worldwide tenders, European traders said.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that human rights should be promoted with respect for specific national customs and traditions.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly expected to be pressed on the diplomatic crisis at a press conference in Montreal. Canadian exports to Saudi Arabia were about $1.12 billion in 2017, or 0.2 percent of the total value of Canadian exports.
