The Redding fire has grown to 206 square miles and has destroyed 1,060 homes and many other structures.

Forecasters said areas with the highest threat include the massive blaze near Redding and two fires burning next to each other around Clear Lake.

Experts say a deadly Northern California wildfire burned so hot at its peak that it created a cyclone of flames that reached 143 miles per hour, ripping through the region with the force of a destructive Midwest tornado. The largest of the two fires was 50 percent contained.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, which uses acres to describe fire size, said the blaze had blackened almost 206 square miles (533 square kilometers).

The blaze has killed two firefighters.

This year, California wildfires have burned more land earlier in the "fire season" than usual, said Ken Pimlott, Cal Fire director, during a news conference on Saturday.

"The Mendocino Complex Fire has charred more than 254,000 acres, making it the fifth largest blaze in California's history", AccuWeather said on its website.

A spokesperson for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, told SFGate she is unaware of any water shortages at the Carr or Mendocino Complex fires, the worst fire zones in the state.


In their latest update on the Mendocino Complex Fire, CAL FIRE estimates containment to be at 30 percent.
