ESPN's Paul Finebaum on what's next for Urban Meyer

Ohio State University found itself mired in another scandal when the school placed its revered head football coach Urban Meyer on paid leave this week after a longtime assistant coach was sacked amid spousal abuse allegations.

The reason it affects Meyer is because Courtney Smith, the ex-wife, claims she told Meyer's wife Shelley about what was happening and that Meyer would be informe as well.

Courtney Smith says she frequently discussed her abuse with Urban Meyer's wife, Shelley. Zach Smith denied the allegation in a statement released by his lawyer.

Yes: the university says it has placed its head football coach on "paid administrative leave," and surely there are crucial bureaucratic differences between we're putting you on leave and we're suspending you from work, but let's not argue the impact.

Co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day has been named acting head coach.

On Thursday, ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum said that he doesn't believe Meyer will survive this scandal.

"I got a text last night that something happened in 2015, and there was nothing", Meyer told reporters at the Big Ten Media Days, adding, "I don't know who creates a story like that". He was one of my coaches when I played.

Even as his support seems to be eroding, possibly even from his employer, in the wake of a bombshell report, Urban Meyer has a champion in Jay Paterno. The charge was dropped because of insufficient evidence.

SC football coach Will Muschamp followed Urban Meyer at Florida, and by multiple media accounts had to fix a Gators program that had been left in a tough spot. Zach Smith was charged with criminal trespassing and a protection order was filed.

In 2009, Zach Smith was accused of aggravated battery on his then-pregnant wife while he was working for Meyer in Gainesville, Florida. Courtney Smith claims her ex-husband shoved her against a wall with his hands around her neck. I've never had a conversation about it.
