More than 1,700 firefighters are battling the blaze, Cal Fire said in an evening advisory. It was sparked by a mechanical issue involving a vehicle, Cal Fire said. "The fire community is extremely heartbroken for this loss".

Chapin says the streets were so jammed with traffic that there was no way for firefighters to come in.

McTigue said their injuries were burns to face, ears, and hands.

So far, one person - a bulldozer operator - has been killed in the so-called Carr Fire, a blaze in Shasta County that has tripled in size in the last two days to 28,000 acres, the state's forestry and fire protection department said.

All three men are now out of the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.

All campsites, hotels and visitor areas will remain closed at least until Sunday, officials said, cutting short summer holidays for...

The blaze on Thursday killed a bulldozer operator working with fire teams to clear brush around the fire. Over the past two decades the fire seasons has become longer, stretching from May to November or December.

Hospital staff are preparing to evacuate the entire facility if needed, a Cal Fire spokesman said.

Multiple power outages were reported, the city said on its website, adding that the electric utility was shutting off power in its northern areas.

Employees at the Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding took Whisper the bobcat, Loki the fox and nearly 50 other animals home with them Thursday night to keep them safe from the deadly Carr Fire, said Turtle Bay CEO Mike Warren.

"I don't think we can predict which way this fire's going to go, and that's why I didn't take any chances", Ing said. "It doesn't sound good".

A local TV news crew in Redding was also evacuated while on the air. The Carr Fire started earlier this week miles out of town, but had rapidly expanded from 8,000 acres on Wednesday night to some 20,000 on Thursday morning. And two people have already lost their lives while fighting the fire.

Gov. Jerry Brown (D) declared a state of emergency in Shasta County, warning that Carr fire "continues to threaten critical infrastructure" and saying that "high temperatures, low humidity, and erratic winds have further increased the spread of this fire".

The season has followed a particularly destructive and deadly fire year in the state -in 2017 almost 9,000 wildfires tore through 1.2m acres, taking down close to 11,000 structures. The Cranston Fire in Riverside County had burned across 11,500 acres and was 3 percent contained at the same time, officials said.
