Heatwave temperatures could break all-time record - but thunderstorms loom

Monday was the hottest day of the year so far, with 33.3C (91.9F) recorded in Santon Downham, Suffolk.

Britons are sweltering in a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures set to test national records, the Meteorological Office says.

"So while the Met Office might say it's going to be 86F (30C), it actually feels more like 75F (24C), which is a handsome temperature for us Brits".

The Met Office is forecasting that the warm weather will continue in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas over the coming days, with no respite from the heatwave in sight.

Spokesman Grahame Madge said low-pressure due to sweep in from the Atlantic will bring heavy rain to western Britain.

It is officially the hottest day of the year so far in the United Kingdom with temperatures soaring to 35C in west London.

The temperature is expected to reach 35C on Thursday (local time).

However, light showers are now forecast for Blackpool with thunderstorms not now being expected.

A level three heat health watch alert is still in place for much of the east and south-east of England.

Parts of the country could see a month's rain in a matter of hours which falling on parched ground will run off in torrents flooding homes and businesses.

Spray and sudden flooding could also lead to hard driving conditions and some road closures.

The Met Office said Sunday's 27C in the North-East will be followed by 23C highs rising to 25C or so - nearly 10C above average - on Thursday and Friday for Edinburgh and with 35C is on the cards in England by the weekend.

"Whilst many places are likely to remain dry, there is the potential for thunderstorms to develop during Friday afternoon, lasting well into the evening".

"Large hail and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards".

The Met Office has recently issued a level 3, or amber, heatwave warning in certain parts of England as temperatures this week are set to reach scorching.

There is a chance East Anglia will see some thunderstorms already on Wednesday, the Met Office added, while temperatures are likely to peak in the mid-30s on Thursday and Friday.
