Trump claims Michael Cohen's phone-taping is ’perhaps illegal’

On his Twitter handle, Trump wrote; "Inconceivable that the government would break into a lawyer's office (early in the morning) - nearly unheard of".

An attorney for President Donald Trump's former lawyer says "any attempt at spin can not change what is on" a recording of Trump discussing a potential payment for a former Playboy model's account of having an affair with him years ago.

On Friday, The New York Times reported that Cohen secretly recorded a conversation with Trump two months before the 2016 presidential election.

The president also insisted he had done nothing wrong.

Trump's current attorney, Rudy Giuliani, said the payment was never made and the tape shows Trump did nothing wrong.

The recording, which hasn't been made public, was discovered as part of an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid in April on attorney Michael Cohen's home office and hotel in NY, sources told ABC News.

The Washington Post reported that Mr Trump and Mr Cohen discussed possibly paying American Media Inc, the parent company of the National Enquirer, for the rights to Ms McDougal's story.

The conversation came weeks after McDougal says the National Enquirer tabloid agreed to pay her $150,000 for the story.

The revelation of the tape comes as Cohen has signalled that he might be willing to cooperate with the federal investigation into his business dealings, a probe that has examined his interactions with AMI and a hush-money payment he arranged with adult-film actress Stormy Daniels, who also claimed to have had a sexual encounter with Trump.

In a tweet on Saturday, a lawyer for Cohen, Lanny Davis called Trump and Giuliani's strategy "flawed" and the president's Twitter statement against Cohen "false". However, 11 states, including Florida, where Trump spends a lot of time, do require both people in a conversation are aware a recording is taking place. "Any attempt at spin cannot change what is on the tape".

According to the Times, in the tape, Trump and his personal attorney Michael Cohen discuss payments to Karen McDougal.

The New York Times first reported the existence of the recording.

Trump and Cohen discussed the possible payment after AMI bought the rights to McDougal's story for $150,000 in August 2016.

Giuliani had earlier denied Trump had an affair with McDougal.

But he said no money was actually ever transferred, and the recording itself amounted to "powerful exculpatory evidence".

A source familiar with the tape said Cohen recommends buying the rights to the story, and Trump asks questions about how they would go about doing that.

Giuliani said the proposed payment was a personal matter and not subject to campaign finance law.

Trump, who married first lady Melania Trump in January 2005, has repeatedly denied having an affair with McDougal, the 1998 Playboy Playmate of the Year.
