China Files Challenge to WTO After Tariff Threats

The Ministry of Commerce on Thursday said that China's additional complaint filed to the World Trade Organization over USA plans to put tariffs on US$200 billion of Chinese products was "necessary to defend the basic principles of the WTO".

The recent trade skirmishes between the US and China escalated recently with the Trump administration levying tariffs on an additional $200 billion worth of imports from China.

The European Union on Monday called on the United States, China and Russian Federation to work together to avoid trade "conflict and chaos" to prevent it spiralling into violent confrontation.

For Zhenjiang Kimtex Industrial Company in eastern China's Jiangsu province, the USA accounts for 40% of its sales, or about 3 million yuan ($445,000) a year.

"Price hikes caused by the increased tariffs would adversely affect these industries".

China on Tuesday refuted US accusations that it has violated WTO rules, saying it would continue to abide by them, and calling on the United States to respect and obey WTO rules.

The launch of Trade War Watch comes with two new digital ads - one aimed at Missouri US Senate candidate Josh Hawley and another at Rep. Andy Barr of Kentucky - that accuse Republicans of ignoring voters to stand by Trump. The Chinese tariffs were imposed after the USA imposed a 25 percent tax on $16 billion worth of Chinese products.

But the story won't end there.

The U.S. struck back at retaliating nations this week, filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO).

After weeks of apparently fruitless negotiations, the United States early this month imposed 25 percent tariffs on approximately $34 billion of Chinese mechanical and technological products, sparking an immediate response from Beijing, which said it would hit back dollar for dollar. Hopes run low for a resolution of the U.S. trade disputes with China, in particular due to the lack of "exit ramps", although the European Union might play along until the midterm elections to the U.S. Congress in November, they added.

Several of the more than 20 governors attending the annual meeting of the National Governors Association said shifting US trade policies are rattling markets for agricultural commodities and complicating decisions by foreign investors.

And despite sharp and repeated criticism of the global trade body the United States strived to create, Washington filed a WTO complaint against the retaliation by China and others.

For China, the shopping list for domestic consumption is focused on premium shellfish, meaning a shift to producers such as Canada, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand is likely, Beyhan de Jong, an associate analyst at the bank, wrote in a recent article. If the winning party does not import same-sector goods, then you see if there are other goods covered by the WTO tariff schedule for that generic type of goods available for retaliatory tariffs.

Sen. Ron Johnson said Wednesday that he has shared some of the trade war concerns with the President.

"The routine policy review has received high attention as 70 WTO members spoke at the meeting, which set a new record", Gao Feng, Ministry of Commerce spokesperson, said at a press conference.

Workers stand in line next to a container ship at a port in China. But WTO proceedings can drag on for years. "None of the countries within the WTO support the United States' unilateral actions".
