Eight Boys Rescued from Flooded Thai Cave

Officials had said before restarting the efforts that they hoped to have all the others in the cave rescued by the end of Monday local time.

"Mini-sub arriving in about 17 hours", he wrote.

A source inside the Chiang Rai Prachanukroh hospital where the first four boys are being kept said their condition was "not bad" but doctors were watching for signs of emerging conditions such as hypothermia. Medics appeared to remove one person on a stretcher but hid the person's identity behind multiple white umbrellas.

Divers have resumed operations to bring out the remaining members of the group.

But rescuing the remaining five people, which includes the boys' 25-year-old soccer coach, could take more than one operation, Narongsak said.

The eight freed boys of the Thai soccer team may have seen daylight for the first time in weeks, but they still can not come face-to-face with their loved ones.

It was not clear who was inside the ambulance or the helicopter.

An ambulance with flashing lights left the site just hours after the second phase of the perilous rescue operation was launched on Monday.

The Australian foreign minister, Julie Bishop, said in a TV interview on Monday morning she believed the boys would be brought out in groups of four.

Thailand's Health Secretary said last week that on arrival at the hospital the boys would need to be quarantined for one to two days before being allowed to see their families.

Officials later confirmed the operation was under way again from about 11am local time (5am BST). The rescued children were taken to the hospital, and officials said early Monday that they are strong and safe but need to undergo detailed medical checks.

In a letter of his own, the coach, Ekapol Chanthawong, apologized to the boys' parents for the ordeal.

Authorities had said that incoming monsoon rains that could send water levels in the cave rising, coupled with falling oxygen levels in the enclosed space, added to the urgency of getting those trapped out.

He urged the public not to put too much pressure on the rescue operation.

The first four boys were rescued on Sunday and are in a stable condition in hospital.

Expert divers Sunday rescued four of 12 young men from a flooded cave in northern Thailand where they were trapped with their soccer mentor for more than two weeks. Musk said his submarine has eight handles, four in the front and four in the rear, and four air tank connections.

The 12 boys and their coach were trapped in the cave for two weeks. Each round trip from the rescue camp to the rocky shelf where the group is trapped takes about 11 hours.

The boys are being guided out of the cave by two divers with oxygen tanks.

A heavy but brief downpour hit the area Monday morning, but authorities said that did not change the water level in the cave, as workers continue to pump water out.

Rescued schoolboys are moved from a military helicopter to an awaiting ambulance at a military airport in Chiang Rai, Thailand, July 9, 2018.

Thailand's Meteorological Department said there was a 60 percent chance of rain Monday with thunderstorms forecast throughout the week.

Following the first four rescues, divers had planned to take a 10- to 20-hour pause in the operation to replenish the cave with oxygen and give the team of 18 divers leading the boys on the perilous journey to safety a chance to rest.
