Tropical Storm Beryl weakens as it moves into Caribbean

Tropical Storm Beryl weakens as it moves into Caribbean

The National Hurricane Center said the third named storm of 2018 in the Atlantic had formed on Sunday morning about 150 miles off the coast of North Carolina.

The National Weather Service put out tropical storm warnings for Dominica and Guadeloupe, and tropical storm watches for Barbados; Martinique, St. Martin, and St. Barthelemy; Saba and St. Eustatius; and St. Maarten.

Beryl's sustained winds are around 75 mph and extend just 10 miles from her center, while her Tropical storm force winds extend out only 35 miles.

While Beryl is forecast to quickly weaken or dissipate before reaching the Lesser Antilles, some rain and wind are expected to impact those islands early next week. Weather forecasters say Tropical Storm Chris is likely to strengthen to a hurricane by Monday but will remain well away from the USA coast for the next two or three days.

There are now both a tropical depression and a hurricane spinning in the Atlantic, but for now, neither appears to be a threat to SC of the U.S. A cold front was expected to push it further north, but latest forecast by the NWS says the low pressure system may linger off the coast for a while, and some development is possible.

As of Sunday evening, Beryl has been downgraded from a Tropical Storm.

The United States National Hurricane Centre said the system could become a tropical storm later today or tomorrow.

The hurricane center noted early Sunday that many forecast models have shifted the path for Chris south and westward. It was moving west at 14 miles per hour, with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour. Chris has not become much more organized since yesterday, however, the winds have increased slightly from 35mph to 40mph (39mph is the minimum for a Tropical Storm). Elsewhere we will be monitoring a series of tropical waves as they move off the African coast over the next several days.

Tropical Storm Beryl is churning in the Atlantic on Sunday and taking aim at the small islands that make up the eastern Caribbean.
