FIFA chief invites trapped Thai boys to World Cup final

A sample of letters exchanged between the parents and the 12 schoolboys and their soccer coach who have been trapped deep inside a cave in northern Thailand for two weeks. This is a unsafe method, particularly as the boys are not experienced divers.

The navy is also seeking permission to posthumously promote Saman, who was a petty officer first class when he left the unit, Channel News Asia reports.

However, Ivan Katadzic, a Danish diving instructor who has been ferrying oxygen tanks inside the cave, said after a dive on Friday evening he was "double positive" about the mission because the water level had dropped considerably.

"When Saman placed the canisters he was on his way back and while he was returning he had lost consciousness".

His diving partner tried performing CPR on him but was unable to revive him. "His job was to deliver oxygen".

Getting out via the same route looks like the only feasible option, but a high-risk one, Thai officials say. His body was sent to Bangkok, where he would receive a royal-sponsored funeral.

Many fans on social media said the boys deserved the World Cup trophy for the way they have handled their ordeal.

He died during an overnight mission in which he was placing oxygen canisters - passing out underwater - Thai Seal commander Arpakorn Yookongkaew has told reporters.

"We are trained to expect risks at anytime. We will not let our fallen brother die in vain".

Lack of oxygen in the cave has proven a danger for rescue workers and the football team - a dozen boys aged between 11 and 16 and their 25-year-old coach.

The Thai user noted a SpaceX engineer who happened to be in Thailand was already helping with geologists to make a more accurate map of the cave. The boys are said to be too weak from malnutrition to even make the trek.

For the first time since they were found, the boys communicated by letter with their relatives - many camped outside the cave's entrance. They were found on July 2, but because of the difficulty of their position in the cave, they can't be rescued yet.

"Regarding the plan for the 13 to swim or dive, there is only one critical point which is risky: It is where every boy has to dive alone", Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osottanakorn said on Thursday.

However, it was said that it was possible they would have to wait for at least four months until the monsoon season ends before they are rescued.

They sought to reassure their parents, telling them they were cold but "doing fine" and being cared for by navy Seal divers.

Since then, rescuers have been examining ways to bring the boys out, including fitting them with full-face oxygen masks and accompanying them on a long, unsafe swim through the tunnels.

The Navy source said boys' biggest challenge would be a 200m stretch of the completely flooded cave that made up part of the 600m section between "Pattaya Beach" and chamber three. Experienced cave rescue experts consider an underwater escape a last resort, especially with people untrained in diving, as the boys are.
