Chaos as Brexit Secretary David Davis resigns

Brexiteer Tory MP Peter Bone supported David Davis' decision to quit just days after crunch talks at the Prime Minister's Chequers summit.

Meanwhile, UK's Brexit Secretary David Davis has reportedly resigned because of how the meeting to hammer out the cabinet agreement was handled.

But Mr Davis's concerns stretched well beyond the actual policy that he would have been forced to sell in a tour of European capitals, starting this week.

David Davis penned a deliberately caustic resignation letter last night outlining a "significant number" of disagreements with Number 10 over the a year ago, from being obliged to accept the Brussels sequencing of negotiations, through to the compromises on the Northern Ireland border last December.

But the Press Association understands that Mr Davis, who signed up to the plan agreed by the Cabinet at Chequers on Friday, has now quit. Davis and Baker, both longstanding eurosceptics, decided they could not support the policy, a person familiar with the matter said.

Other ministers in his department, including Steve Baker and Suella Braverman are said to have agreed a "you go, we go" pact with Mr Davis, suggesting Mrs May could find herself having to replace the entire Brexit department if she.

The double resignation late on Sunday has the potential to derail May's government and set in motion a chain of events that could lead to an attempt to oust her as prime minister. Their stand may embolden pro-Brexit lawmakers to make a move against her.

"There is no doubt it is a blow, given at the end of the last week it seemed things moving in the direction of - perhaps you could call it unity", said Mitul Kotecha, a senior currency strategist at TD Securities in Singapore.

The pound weakened slightly on the news.

May replied in a letter saying that her Brexit plan "will undoubtedly mean the returning of powers from Brussels to the United Kingdom" and was in line with her commitment to leave the European single market and customs union.

May is due to address parliament later on Monday to explain her plan for Britain to adopt European Union rules on goods after Brexit, amid anger from MPs in her own party who want a cleaner break and businesses who say it may still cause economic harm.

"Outside of the EU, Britain will be nimbler, more open to innovation and technological change, at the same time as driving up global standards", he wrote.

"This is her fifth cabinet resignation in nine months". She can not deliver Brexit and our country is at a complete standstill, while the Tories indulge in their leadership tussling.

After Cameron resigned following defeat in the Brexit referendum, Davis was appointed back in government by May, Cameron's replacement.

In that meeting, May had appeared to win over her fractious cabinet and secure approval for her plan, which was to be published as soon as this week in a lengthy white paper that would stake out Britain's vision for future relations with Europe. Some lawmakers have already expressed their misgivings.
