Serena Williams beats Mladenovic to give notice that comeback title is on

Seven-time champion Serena Williams reached the Wimbledon fourth round on Friday with a 7-5, 7-6 (7/2) win over France's Kristina Mladenovic.

In the men's tournament, Roger Federer's latest victory never looked in doubt as he won 37 of 40 first-serve points and stretched his Wimbledon winning streak to 29 sets, beating Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.

"It was really tough because I played her in Miami, I had a few match points there and I lost so that was going into my mind sometimes".

Heather Watson and her partner Tatjana Maria also ensured they had a place in the third round of the women's doubles with a routine 6-3 6-1 win over Raquel Atawo and Anna-Lena Gronefeld.

If anyone doubted Serena Williams was worth consideration as a victor of this tournament for an eighth time - let alone the 25th seeding that has caused a minor stir in the locker room - she provided the most emphatic statement of intent with her third straight-sets win of the week to reach the fourth round on a wave of growing self-belief.

"I've gotten so good at playing the one match in front of me", said Keys of her progress in recent years.

"Just ran out of time in the end", Williams said.

Keys was the seventh of the top 10 seeds to lose before the middle Sunday, testimony to the strength of the women's game or confirmation of Johanna Konta's contention after her defeat against Dominika Cibulkova the previous evening that the seedings do not necessarily reflect the quality of the opponent?

The American 25th seed moved into the second week without dropping a set and will next face Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina.

Keys, who was the US Open runner-up a year ago, crashed out 7-5 5-7 6-4 to the Russian on a baking hot Court Three.

Darkness descended at just the right time as the German came back to win 6-4 5-7 6-7 (0/7) 6-1 6-2, justifying his eventual decision to not withdraw.

Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev completed another five-set comeback, beating American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 5-7, 6-7 (0), 6-1, 6-2 in a match that was suspended Thursday after the third set. "So it will be great to play against her".

Keys lost nine games on the trot from 5-2 up in the first set to 0-4 down in the second. She then broke back to level the third set at 4-4, but Rodina immediately earned another break and served out the victory.

Zverev also erased a 2-1 deficit three times to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open, his best result at a Grand Slam. But I always expect to do the best I can do.
