North Korea Could Dismantle Nuclear Program within a Year

The accuracy and completeness of the inventory, which the US will able to partially verify based on spy satellite images and other intelligence, will tell whether North Korea is serious about giving up the nukes.

Responding to the report, Trump said, "I think they (North Koreans) are very serious about it (denuclearisation)".

Stanford University researcher Siegfried Hecker, a former director of Los Alamos National Laboratory and authority on global nuclear threat reduction, said this was the tough part of a denuclearization deal with notoriously deceptive North Korea.

Trump and Kim pledged after their June 12 summit to work toward "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula, but experts have criticized its vagueness and absence of language committing North Korea to the US's goal of "complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization" - which Pyongyang has routinely refused to carry out.

The Middlebury Institute report comes on the heels of a conclusion by US intelligence officials that North Korea is planning to hide its nuclear stockpile and production facilities, reported by the Washington Post.

Canada confirmed on Sunday that it had imposed tariffs on about $12.6 billion worth of US exports in retaliation for President Trump's levies on imported steel and aluminum.

The Post's report corroborates a Friday exposé by NBC News that quoted US intelligence officials warning of North Korea's attempts to hide information from the USA about its nuclear program.

Xi in turn told Kim he "actively supports North Korea's reform and opening-up and will proactively cooperate with issues associated with the efforts", according to the Yomiuri.

Asked about the US diplomat's visit, Kim Eui-keum, a spokesman for South Korea's Blue House, said that they were aware of the meeting but that it would be inappropriate to comment further.

"We've seen how the North Koreans have behaved before", he said.

Evidence collected since the pair's historic meeting points to secret production facilities and the development of methods to conceal weapons creation - implying Pyongyang is aiming to hide plans to continue its nuclear program from the USA, having made contrary, if ambiguous, commitments to Washington.

The US President and North Korea's leader have finally met.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be discussing with the North Koreans in the near future about really how to dismantle all of their weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs in a year, he said.

"We know exactly what the risks are of them using negotiations to drag out the length of time they have to continue their nuclear, chemical, biological programs and ballistic missiles", Mr. Bolton said.

"New building didn't appear to begin in earnest until April this year, around the time Mr. Kim shook hands with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in a landmark summit meeting at the inter-Korean border, according to a series of satellite images".

Sung Kim, formerly an ambassador to South Korea and a nuclear negotiator with the North during previous talks, has taken on a key role in dialogue with Pyongyang in recent months.

"I don't want a war with North Korea", Graham said.

Washington and Pyongyang have yet to negotiate a plan for how North Korea will denuclearize. If the leak was authorized, however, that could mean that the Trump administration is working to highlight and leverage North Korea's bad faith ahead of additional negotiations.

Over the weekend NBC News first reported that Pyongyang has in fact recently been increasing fuel production for nuclear weapons at several hidden sites.
