Lance Stephenson Is The Latest Veteran To Join The Los Angeles Lakers

The 33-year-old superstar announced Monday (AEST) via his agency he has agreed to a four-year, $154 million contract with the Lakers.

This also means that, for the first time in his career, LeBron will be playing in the NBA's Western Conference, eliminating the chance of next year's NBA Finals being a fifth-consecutive showdown between the Golden State Warriors and whatever side LeBron is on.

The Lakers can offer top money plus talent and draft picks in order to surround James with competitive players enough to challenge the Warriors, who suddenly must contend with James as a Pacific division rival rather than a foe to be faced only twice a season and for the National Basketball Association title. Beating the Warriors in seven games in 2016, James earned NBA Finals MVP honors as Cleveland won its first major sports championship in 52 years.

The move could spark a stronger rivalry between California's two NBA basketball teams - the James-led Cavaliers lost the NBA finals a year ago to the Golden State Warriors.

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embid (right) greets LeBron James. That said, an announcement on Tuesday, which is July 3, goes along with ESPN's Brian Windhorst recently saying that James' decision would come before the July 4 holiday.

James thanked his home area in an Instagram story. "When you have a goal and you're able to accomplish that goal, it actually - for me personally, it made me even more hungry to continue to try to win championships, and I still want to be in championship mode".

The Lakers are reportedly hoping to acquire another star or two to play alongside James.

And while such big names as Chris Paul of Houston and Paul George of Oklahoma City have agreed to terms to stay with their teams, nothing can be signed until Friday - leaving lots of time for players to consider what sort of situation the Lakers with James could offer.
