Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Millennial beats veteran Democrat

NY 14th district Democratic candidate and almost-certain future Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dismissed House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) downplaying of her stunning win Tuesday, saying that her victory is part of a "movement".

Ocasio-Cortez, 28, a former organizer for Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign and a onetime staffer for the late Sen. "Here in NY, the progressive revolution has begun, and we could not be more proud to be a part of that movement", she tweeted.

"To know Congressman Crowley is to know his fierce pride in representing Queens and the Bronx, and the joy and effectiveness he brought to serve as their voice in the Congress", she said.

"I hope that this reminds us of what the Democratic Party should be about, which is, first and foremost, accountability from the working-class people", she said Tuesday night.

This woman just said that a Dem *primary* win by a socialist candidate was part of a "red tsunami".

"It may not be exactly the same", Richardson said.

"I never really saw myself running on my own", she told NY magazine "I counted out that possibility because I felt that possibility had counted out me".

The political newcomer, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was working as a server in a NY restaurant just nine months ago, is a former volunteer for Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign and comes from a Puerto Rican family.

"We talked to people throughout the Midwest, visited Flint, Michigan; and finally ended our trip with a stay at Standing Rock", she said, referring to the protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota. "Let's make sure we do that, and then we can have that conversation". He cited Amy McGrath, a former fighter pilot who beat the popular mayor of Lexington, Kentucky in the Democratic primary to challenge Rep. Andy Barr (R-Kentucky). In this race, he did not attend either of the two debates that had been scheduled between the two candidates.

Mr. Crowley is the first Democratic incumbent to lose his re-election bid this year.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Crowley had been an unwavering champion for America's working families for nearly two decades. But when it comes to retaking the presidency, Democrats should focus on presenting a candidate who can appeal to people beyond the left-most fringe of their progressive wing. So Colbert asked, "Are going to be nicer to the President?"

"We will only be able to stop Donald Trump and the Republican Congress by working together, as a united Democratic Party", he said.

"She took on the entire local Democratic establishment in her district and won a very strong victory", he said in a statement.

"The biggest hurdle that our communities have is cynicism-saying it's a done deal, who cares, there's no point to voting", Ocasio-Cortez told volunteers in the lead-up to election day. She has also expressed solidarity for Puerto Rico, still recovering from Hurricane Maria.

Mr Crowley, a 10-term Democrat, had been tipped as a future party leader or even Speaker of the House.

Ocasio-Cortez even tweeted, "Vote her next MA".

"He's done some phenomenal, phenomenal work for the Bronx and Queens".

Ocasio-Cortez ran on a left-wing platform that included a federal jobs guarantee program and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the border patrol enforcement agency created under President George W. Bush in 2003.

I suppose she's trying to save face now.

Ocasio-Cortez shared an Instagram post during her campaign previous year that showed her hard a work behind the bar. Cuomo's campaign has aggressively taken on Nixon, portraying her as an inexperienced celebrity, while the governor has moved further to the left, tracking his opponent's stances on loosening marijuana restrictions, eliminating cash bail and addressing chronic problems in New York City public housing.
