Japan advances over Senegal on yellow card tiebreaker and Twitter has thoughts

It is important to note that the fair play conduct rule is applied on the basis of all group matches and not only the fair play conduct during the match between Senegal and Japan in this case.

Senegal's 1-0 loss to Colombia in Thursday's Group H closer meant Cisse's side finished third in the final table, below Japan thanks to their count of six bookings compared to the four collected by the Asian nation.

Japan also lost its final match of the group stage, 1-0, leaving both teams tied in points and the most common tiebreakers, point differential and goals scored.

Igor Smolnikov of Russian Federation reacts after being shown a second yellow card by referee Antonio Malang Diedhiou during a Group A match against Uruguay earlier this week.

Teams are given minus one point for a yellow card, minus three for a sending off for two bookings, and minus four for a straight red.

If Poland, who are yet to collect a single point in the competition, beat Japan in the other Group H clash, both Senegal and Colombia will go through with a draw.

The first tiebreakers, goal differential and goals scored, couldn't determine a victor - the teams both had a goal differential of 0 and had scored four goals each.

Each team begins the tournament with zero points and loses points for each carded foul given by a referee.

Idrissa Gueye and Salif Sane were carded against Poland, Youssouf Sabaly, Mbaye Niang and Cheikh Ndoye were booked versus Japan, before Niang saw yellow again against the Colombians.

But, in failing to progress, Senegal may have ensured Ireland's all-time record of progressing to the knockout stage at each of the three World Cups they have reached, stays in place. It is as rough a way as you can imagine being eliminated from the tournament, outside of a giving up a last-second goal.

After the fair play rule, there was only one other way a tiebreaker could have been solved, which would have been the drawing of lots by FIFA Organizing Committee.
