Audi CEO arrested: Volkswagen

German prosecutors named Stadler and one other Audi executive as suspects for fraud and false advertisement in the vehicle maker's continuing emissions scandal, Efe news reported. Munich prosecutors told the state-owned broadcaster that they swooped on Stadler over fears he might try to suppress evidence in the ongoing Dieselgate investigation.

Two former VW chief executives - Martin Winterkorn and his successor Matthias Mueller - have both landed in the sights of German prosecutors.

News of the arrest comes as VW's new group CEO Herbert Diess is trying to introduce a new leadership structure - which includes Stadler - and speed up the group's shift towards electric vehicles in the wake of the biggest motoring scandal in modern history.

It is understood the VW group's supervisory board will meet later in the day to discuss the development.

"The arrest warrant is based on concealment of evidence", Munich prosecutors said.

"For Mr Stadler, the presumption of innocence continues to apply", a spokesman said in a statement.

Autocar is due to receive an official comment from Audi imminently.

As of 2015, Audi has admitted to having utilized illegal cheat devices which manipulate their car's emissions with Stadler at the helm since 2007.

The Munich public prosecutor's office said last week it was investigating 20 suspects, and that it had searched the apartment of Stadler and one other current board member.

Prosecutors in Munich, Stuttgart and Braunschweig are continuing their investigations of the carmaker and its units.

Most of its problems have been in the United States, where a total of nine people have been charged and two former VW executives have pleaded guilty and been sentenced to prison terms.

The infamous Dieselgate scandal surfaced in 2015 and has cost the Volkwagen Group billions of dollars.

Volkswagen, which last week agreed to pay a fine of €1 billion ($1.2 billion) imposed by German prosecutors, confirmed the arrest.
