Unsettling Trump Mural Greets Children at Detention Center in Former Walmart

A Texas immigration shelter housing unaccompanied minors has opened its doors to the public for the first time in the history of its operation amid intense interest after a US senator was turned away from the facility.

Images of an immigrant child detention center show the conditions in which almost 1,500 undocumented migrant boys are being sheltered in Brownsville, Texas.

USA representative Will Hurd said the shelter near the Tornillo port of entry in far West Texas will house about 360 boys who are 16 and 17.

As you've surely heard, children are being taken and separated from their parents because of President Trump and Jeff Sessions' "Zero Tolerance" illegal immigration policy.

Employees at Casa Padre, a former Walmart that houses almost 1,500 unaccompanied migrant children in Brownsville, Texas, called the police on Sen.

Children held in custody by the health department's Office of Refugee Resettlement are spread out in a network of federally licensed facilities.

The shelter was reported to be clean and well staffed. Newsweek said, "At that specific Casa Padre shelter, a child who tested positive for a sexually transmitted disease was not given medical treatment for two weeks".

"I don't think we should have any children that are brought across the border illegally, many times by drug cartels and coyotes who abuse those children, and sexually assault, physically assault those children", Cruz said Saturday.

Casa Padre, which reportedly used to be a Walmart, is operated by the firm, Southwest Key, which runs more than a dozen shelters housing migrant children in Texas, the San Antonio Express News reports.

There is a mural of Donald Trump when you walk in, with the quote, "Sometimes losing a battle you find a new way to win the war". As Soboroff wrote on Twitter, although "there are no cells and no cages, and they get to go to classes about American history and watch Moana ... they're in custody". Once cleared, the boys stay at Casa Padre for an average of 49 days. Jeff Merkley of OR from entering when he tried to tour the facility on June 3. Soboroff told Chris Hayes on MSNBC Tuesday night.
