Democrats compete in Virginia's 10th Congressional District primary

With both party primaries set for Tuesday, strong Democratic candidates are expected to emerge to challenge almost every major statewide office now held by Nevada Republicans, offering Democrats their best shot in years to seize political control over the state. The winners started to be announced about an hour after the polls closed at 7 p.m.

Horry County voters, depending on which district they live in and what party, have the chance to vote for seats these seats: governor, secretary of state, attorney general, U.S. House of Representatives, school board and county council and county council chair.

And in the 6th and 9th districts, Democrats will pick their candidates for Congress.

Trump's support for Heller in the primaries was a significant development, given the Nevada Republican's lukewarm public support for Trump during the 2016 election.

Last year, Virginia Democrats saw a wave election, propelling Ralph Northam to the governor's mansion and flipping 15 Republican seats in the House of Delegates. Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) is nearly certain to win the Republican primary to face Sen. "I think she brings an interesting potential challenge to McEachin, on issues he's been able to own comfortably".

While they have focused their campaigns on health care, gun control and the GOP tax law - along with Comstock's record of largely voting in line with Trump - the Democrats, in interviews with ABC News, differentiated themselves with various ideas about on how to best challenge the president and hold him accountable.

"I think it's in some ways a bit of a thermometer about how Republicans in the state of Virginia are going to either embrace or move away from the President, because Corey Stewart has embedded himself and wrapped his arms around the administration", said NBC12 Political Analyst and VCU professor Dr. Deirdre Condit. Her district, which stretches from the West Virginia border to McLean, shares territory with nine Democrats in the state House of Delegates.

Alison Friedman, a former State Department official who worked to combat human trafficking, said in an interview that she's "always been motivated by standing up to abuses of power", before accusing Trump of doing the same.

Democrats have flipped 43 state legislative seats from red to blue since Trump became president. Kaine, who ran as Hillary Clinton's vice presidential candidate in 2016, has held the seat since 2013.

On the Senate side, Republicans will select from among three candidates their nominee to pit against first-term incumbent Democrat Tim Kaine in November.

The state's tilt toward Democrats in recent years gives the party reason for some optimism.

Republican state Attorney General Adam Laxalt is expected to win the GOP primary for the governor's race.

In the Democratic primary, Horsford defeated six other candidates for the nomination after entering the race in late January. Two Republicans are vying for the nomination: Ryan McAdams and Shion Fenty.
