Trump says he ordered his representatives not to sign G7’s final communique

Having left the Group of Seven summit in Canada early, Trump's announcement that he was backing out of the joint communique torpedoed what appeared to be a fragile consensus on the trade dispute between Washington and its top allies.

He rebuked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for being "dishonest & weak" and making "false statements". "I have made it clear to the president that [imposing retaliatory tariffs] is not something we relish doing, but it's something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said.

Europe will implement counter-measures against USA tariffs on steel and aluminum just like Canada, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, voicing regret about Trump's decision to withdraw support for the communique.

Kudlow said the United States had spent the summit negotiating in "good faith" with Trudeau and the other assembled leaders, and that the USA had planned to sign the communique until Trudeau's news conference, which Kudlow called a "sophomoric play".

A proposal by United States President Donald Trump, that Russian Federation should re-join the annual gathering of the seven advanced economies of the world has caused tensions within the group, with the proposal not having been well received by the remainder of the group's leaders.

"International cooperation can not depend on being angry and on sound bites".

"When we disagree with our allies on something it is right that we say so and air the issue openly and frankly", she said at a news conference.

The president's sharp comments came as he is now en route to Singapore for a highly anticipated meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, set to be held on Tuesday.

Trudeau made the remarks when he met with Trump during the G7 Summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada on Friday, according to the official G7 website.

"We'll either leave it the way it is as a threesome deal with Canada, the United States and Mexico, and change it very substantially.or we're going to make a deal directly with Canada, directly with Mexico", Trump said at a press conference at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Quebec.

Trudeau said he told Trump directly that Canada 'particularly did not take lightly the fact that [the tariffs were] based on a national security reason'. "We are like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing and that ends".

Before Trudeau's announcement, there had been speculation that the USA might be excluded from the communique due to high tensions between Trump and some G-7 leaders over recently imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

Vice President Mike Pence told Trudeau he would have to agree to that before Trump would agree to meet him.

That leaves Trump diametrically opposed with Canada, which says renegotiating the deal every five years would create perpetual uncertainty and harm long-term investment. We have seen this with the climate agreement or the Iran deal. "We are open to dialogue, but that does not mean transforming a defined process, linked to the implementation of the Minsk accords", he said.

Trump's closest advisers added to the attack during televised interviews on Sunday.

The G7 joint communique, which advocates a "rules-based trading system", was reached despite tension over U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, reported BBC.

We can't pose a security threat to the United States, and I know that Americans understand that.
