Trump says he may pardon late boxing champion Muhammad Ali

The White House announced it had pardoned Johnson later Wednesday. "His memory is very popular now, I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali". Trump said that "instead of talk", he is going to ask protesting players to suggest "people that they think were unfairly treated by the justice system". The Supreme Court would overturn his conviction in 1971. The White House did not immediately respond to questions about why the president feels one is warranted. Ali was born Cassius Clay, and changed his name after converting to Islam in the 1960s.

The iconic sportsman - who died in 2016 at the age of 74 - was convicted of refusing to turn up for military duty in 1967 after being drafted to fight in the Vietnam War. "The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the conviction of Muhammad Ali in a unanimous decision in 1971".

Ali eventually became licensed again, however, and he went on to have a storied boxing career that lasted until 1981.

President Donald Trump said Friday he may grant a pardon to the late heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, who doesn't seem to need one.

Jackson had been convicted of violating the Mann Act in 1913 when it was ruled that he took a woman across state lines for "immoral purposes". Trump already has granted a posthumous pardon to boxing's first black heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson, more than 100 years after many saw as his racially charged conviction.

"We have 3,000 names". We are looking at them.

Trump said he was not considering pardoning O.J. Simpson.

For Trump, Kardashian's support of Johnson was key, given the President's penchant for considering the pardoning of celebrities like Martha Stewart and former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, also a former TV personality.

"There will be more pardons", Trump said.

Johnson, who served nearly 22 years in federal prison for a first-time criminal offense, was pardoned this week. In March, he pardoned a U.S. Navy sailor who served a year in federal prison after taking photos of classified portions of a submarine. "There is no conviction from which a pardon is needed".

Mr Trump's comments follow his pardon of conservative political commentator and author Dinesh D'Souza.
