Woman in fatal field crash held on $500K bail

In 2013, Douglas Parkhurst confessed to driving the vehicle that killed Carolee. Parkhurst, a NY native and Vietnam veteran, moved the kids from the car's path and attempted to close a gate to keep the sedan in the ballpark when he was struck, authorities told ABC 8.

One witness, Justin Clifton, told WCSH-TV: "After the auto got off the field, [the driver] came to the gate and the older guy pushed the kids right out of the way". "The older guy pushed the kids right out of the way".

Mr Parkhurst died on the way to the hospital, and no-one else was hurt.

News that the 61-year-old had been killed by a driver in Sanford brought closure to the family of the girl killed in that incident.

They conveyed "deep sorrow to the family of the courageous man that gave his life tonight protecting others".

In an eerie coincidence, five years ago Parkhurst admitted to killing four-year-old Carolee Ashby in 1968. "She asked if he would please come to her and say he was sorry, so she doesn't have to feel her daughter was just left in the street like she was garbage", Darlene explained.

Parkhurst confessed to the hit and run in 2013, but he was never charged - the statute of limitations had run out.

And now, in a Hollywood twist, Parkhurst has been killed saving children from a auto.

She says her father died never knowing who killed Carolee.

"The same thing that happened to my sister happened to him. Now it is time to move on". Witnesses said Parkhurst - a grandfather who told cops he was behind the wheel of a auto that fatally struck little Carolee Ashby in NY in 1968 - tried to shut a gate to stop the crazed driver, but was hit and killed. It was the elder Ashby girl's 15th birthday, and the sisters had gone out to buy candles for a cake.

It took 44 years for the Ashby family to learn what happened to Carolee.

The collision threw Carolee 133 feet.

Douglas Parkhurst, of West Newfield, was near the park's main gate before he was hit and Sharrow sped away, police said.

Police, however, were skeptical of his story. Parkhurst went off to Vietnam, and the case was forgotten when he returned.

Finally, in 2012, a Facebook comment led to a tip that broke open the case, and resulted in Parkhurst's confession.

Darlene Ashby McCann, who was holding her little sister's hand when she was struck, said that Mr Parkhurst never apologised. "Other than that, I don't have any info to share about how familiar or not she is to the community". Maine State Police and the Sanford Police Department are continuing to investigate the incident. Fifteen days after police first knocked on his door, Parkhurst appeared at the Fulton police station.

In a written statement, Parkhurst explained he had been drinking with his brothers before he started driving his auto.

"While I drove through the city of Fulton, I heard a thud", Parkhurst wrote in his confession, in which he estimated he had around three beers. "I did not see what I hit".

"I felt kind of helpless because at that point the only thing I knew was I cared about the safety of the kids on the ball field", Curley said. I did not stop.

"I know in my heart and I am 99.9 percent sure I hit that little girl with my 1962 tan Buick Special", Parkhurst wrote, according to the Press Herald, citing a series of articles by the Post-Standard in Syracuse.

Parkhurst left NY and moved to ME after he confessed to the hit-and-run, and reportedly never apologized to McCann or her family for what he did. "I can't change anything but I hope this apology will be accepted and I beg for forgiveness", he wrote in a four-page confession.
