Jared Leto Fails To Read The Room, Announces New Joker Film

Jared Leto Fails To Read The Room, Announces New Joker Film

Despite earning awful reviews, "Suicide Squad" (2016) made Warner Bros. nearly $747 million at the worldwide box office. According to a new report, Warner Bros. and DC Films are looking to expand upon the Suicide Squad characters for the future, which already includes projects for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey and now Leto's own standalone Joker film. Update: Deadline says the Phillips Joker movie is still in the works.

Variety reports that the studio is developing a standalone film for Jared Leto's Joker, who debuted as a supporting character in David Ayer's 2016 super villain team-up pic, Suicide Squad.

The current list of announced projects on the DC Comics slate of movies at Warner Bros is hefty, and there are now four Joker-family movies announced, with Suicide Squad 2 as the fourth which is still evidently on the way. It's also not clear what the movie would be about, but it should connect to "Suicide Squad" or the sequel in some way. This is not to mention The Batman which may or may not have Ben Affleck in it, and could easily have the Joker as well, though it looks more likely it'll be the Penguin. Leto pretty much had a cameo in the film and was rarely seen.

Suicide Squad wasn't what you'd call a hit with critics, but the 2016 superhero flick made nearly $750m worldwide - about $90m more than Justice League. As for Joaquin Phoenix taking on the Clown Prince of Crime with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese, that remains a mystery. Leto's Joker standalone film will be the second movie to branch out of Suicide Squad.
